Enigma Verte offers very herbaceous scents and is elegant as well as mellow. An absinthe that will please beginners and confirmed drinkers. It is an authentic product produced according to a traditional Swiss recipe drawn from a treaty on the production of spirits in the 19th century. Enigma Verte is produced exclusively from plants and seeds without any added sugar. Its colour is 100% natural and is obtained by infusion of different flowers and leaves (to extract the chlorophyll). It is not filtered. Enigma Verte has the particularity of having been produced from a distilled blend (each plant macerates and is then distilled individually before blending). An excellent absinthe for fabulous sensations !

Did you know?

- The Verte de Fougerolles is now known under the name Enigma Verte. Though the recipe has not changed, the label has, it now displays an Art-Nouveau design, in the vein of 1900 absinthe posters. The Enigma is still the fine wine alcohol-based absinthe that worldwide absintheurs have praised since 2003 under the name Verte de Fougerolles, no change there, the name Enigma has been adopted in 2010 simply because of the issues for non-French speakers to say the name “Fougerolles”.

- During the Belle Epoque, after Pontarlier, Fougerolles had the highest number of producers of absinthe. Sometimes some of the casks used in Fougerolles were sent to Pontarlier to cover their needs.

- Enigma Verte participated in the 2007 Absinthiades ; it was awarded 7th place.

Serving Suggestion

- At first, savour Enigma Verte with half a piece of sugar. Then add more or less according to your taste.

- For one measure of absinthe (3cl), add 2 to 5 measure of fresh water.

This has been a favorite of mine since before they changed the name to "Enigma". It's probably my favorite absinthe that is not among the Jade line of absinthes. It has a very bold complex nose. The taste is equally complex, with many herbs and spices evident but no single one of them stands out in an obvious or overpowering way. Perfectly balanced. Louche is beautifuly opalescent and creamy. I highly recommend this, it is a great Jade type absinthe without the high price.

I bought this on a whim with one other type of absinthe and I am happy I did. This is truly a great find and I would buy this again. I haven't tried this side-by-side with Jade's 1901, but I would say this is the closest one I've had to it. And the with the difference in price, I would say this is a great go-to for one of the best absinthes I've tried at a super reasonable price. The aromatic flavors in this, make a beautiful combination where no one flavor dominates. The louche is thick and beautifully opalescent. I've tried several absinthes and I don't easily give 5 stars, but this one is truly deserving of it.

Louche gut mit einer leicht gelbgrünen Farbe, das Vorhandensein von Alkohol und Artemisia wird festgestellt.

Ein paar Sätze zum Enigma Verte. Den Blanche kenne ich bereits, war ganz ok. Sehr intensiv auf jeden Fall. In der Regel mag ich einen Verte lieber. Mal schauen.

Der Verte hat 2% Alkohol weniger, also gehe ich fast davon aus das ein anderes Rezept ist neben dem eigentlichen „färben“. Flasche und Etikett sind bescheiden, schlicht. Interessant ist, das die klare Flasche deutliche grüne Ablagerungen hat. Außerdem ist es wohl das satteste, dunkelste grün was mir bisher über den Weg gelaufen ist. Trotzdem ein sehr natürlicher Ton. Sieht fantastisch aus. Der Verschluss ist aus Kork, lässt sich aber wiederverwenden – also ist gesteckt.

Pur, gerochen, auch sehr scharf. Es bleibt zudem etwas blumiges, frisches, leicht torfiges übrig. Insgesamt lecker, wenn auch sehr streng nach Alkohol.

Pur gekostet fällt die Identifizierung von einer klaren Richtung etwas schwer. Sehr frisch, wenig bitter, leicht nach Wein vermag ich noch zu sagen. Ansonsten brennt es einfach nur. Aber wie immer – macht man ja eigentlich nicht.

Der Louche beginnt zügig und ist ölig, dicht. Ich nutze ein Glas mit Bubble Reservoir, da sieht man im grünen Teil – wo der Absinthe ist, auf Grund der dunklen Farbe sehr wenig. Im Wasser Teil etwas mehr, aber auch nicht lang. Es bildet sich ein sehr sehr dichter grüner Nebel. Etwa 1:2 verdünnt sehr ich nicht mal den Halogenstrahler durch. Sieht aus wie grüne Milch.

Ein imposantes Ergebnis, leider ein wenig spektakulärer Weg dorthin.

Der Geruch jetzt erdig, Anis und Wermut übertrumpfen das noch. 1:2 verdünnt schmeckt er etwas muffig und trist zu beginn, aber wahnsinnig frisch im Abgang. Ich glaube 1:2 ist hier nicht mein Fall ein weiter Teil Wasser, also 1:3 bzw 75% Wasseranteil. Geschmacklich bleibt es aber ähnlich, tiefer muss man nicht verdünnen. Er ist sehr sommerlich, der Anis bitzelt noch einige Zeit nach dem Trinken. Er ist wenig bis gar nicht bitter, die mittlere Süße stammt deutlich vom Fenchel.

Er ist all in all ganz ok. Imposant wie gesagt die Farbe. Geschmacklich etwas für Anisliebhaber. Ich habe mir ihn etwas wilder, vielfältiger vorgestellt auf Grund der dunklen Farbe, deswegen präferiere ich die „Grünen“.

Für mich gute 3/5 Sternen. Ganz ok, aber bis auf die Farbe und hohen Anisanteil wenig speziell.

Simply oustandingly unique. The louche is amazing, changing between yellow and green with a "slick" of botanical oils on top. It is creamy, thick and utterly delicious. A favourite.

This one has gradually become my favorite among the French traditional type Absinthes I have tried so far. It has a complex palate and a nasty edge that I can´t really define, but since I once got used to it – I just love it! A deep green color and a heavy louche contributes to my judgement. Full tilt!

Color: beautiful deep peridot/feuille morte. Just what I was looking for. Lovely.
Louche: fast and very thick, which hit me as the possibility of star anise presence.
Aroma: strangely familiar...
Taste: it all made sense at this point; pretty much a clone of Libertine 72 but without the "grass".
Finish: lasting numb, bold and creamy; with the mud removed, this turned out to be very appealing.
Effect: soothing, calming, focusing, though not so stimulant as other more bitter absinthes.

CONCLUSION: in short, the clean version on Libertine 72. Honestly, I didn't have the chance to taste the original Verte de Fougerolles; but if I have my dates right, it seems pretty obvious that Enigma built over the achievements and weaknesses of Libertine 72. I figure the difference in the price is worth to cover up for better ingredients in the recipe, including enough green anise to achieve the full body provided by star anise but without its more shoddy qualities.

AFTERMATH: whereas initially a strong detractor of Libertine 72, I later get used to it and learned to enjoy a certain character amidst its faults. With Enigma, I found that very same character in a straightforward way and it turned out to suit me really well. Whereas looking for round balance I'd go for Authentique and looking for wormwood I'd go for Angélique, I now can say too that looking for anise I'd go for Enigma as mid-range remorseless recommendations.

This absinthe is truly delicious and a highly prized member of my collection. Very complex, creamy, and had I no tongue I would be completely satisfied to just smell a louched glass of it all night.

Opened my first bottle of Enigma this evening and there is no doubt that this is the same absinthe as the Absinthe Verte de Fougerolles that I fell in love with a bottle ago. (And "enigma" really is much easier to pronounce than "fougerolles" for a not-in-the-least-French person.) This is my favorite absinthe so far, although my experience is still meager. I've sampled enough to know that I prefer French over Swiss any day, and that Paul Devoille distills spirits that please me particularly. I prefer Enigma over the Libertine 68 and the Soixante-cinq, both of which I also like very much. To me, Enigma is like the freshest new-mown lawn combined with the crispest cleanest coldest snowfall ever. It is my favorite conundrum.

Très bonne absinthe pour celles et ceux qui aiment la douceur. Dans la lignée qualitative de ce que fait la distillerie Devoille. Perso j'aurais apprécié un peu + d'amertume mais c'est une question de goût.

1859: The distillery was founded by Xavier Devoille. His son, Paul Devoille, was very dedicated to developing the distillery, and worked hard on its growth. This is why up until this day, the distillery is named after him. Paul Devoille was a very important person in Fougerolles, he held the position of the major for many years.

1986: Due to the bad financial position the distillery was in, Jaques Veillet, the new owner of the distillery, decided to sell it to an experienced business man, who already invested into a couple of other distilleries inside and outside on France. René Miscault bought the distillery, and made some rapid administrational changes. He also expanded their product range, and opened the distillery for visitors to the public. These measures may seem drastic, however, they saved the distillery in the end. Today, Hugues Miscault, the son of René Miscault, runs the distillery.

 

Paul Devoille's Absinthe:

Their probably most popular absinthes, apart from the Libertines, and the Enigma Verte and Enigma Blanche. Absinthe Soixante-Cinq is a pretty interesting absinthe as well, with a quite spicy smell combined with a fruityness from the wine-alcohol base. Certainly, there are a lot of other spirits produced at Paul Devoille, such as eau-de-vies and liqueurs. From plum to strawberry, you can find nearly all of the common flavours.
