Mellow and with a light aniseed flavour, Libertine 55 is a refined absinthe. Very original.

It won a prize in the 2002 and 2005 Absinthiades in Pontarlier, France. It was also awarded a gold medal at the Concours Général Agricole (CGA) 2018 in Paris.

Libertine 55, produced according to a recipe from last century (1894), is an authentic absinthe, sugarless.
It is entirely made with plants and seeds. Its colour is 100% natural.

Contrary to Libertine 72, Libertine 55 contains liquorice which can be clearly recognized in the taste.

Libertine 55 has the particularity of having been produced from a distilled blend (each plant macerates and is then distilled individually before blending).

Did you know?

- The label of Libertine 55 bottle was taken from a painting, that we specially ordered from a young of the Vosges. It represents a scene of absinthe being consumed in a café.

- During the Belle Epoque, after Pontarlier, Fougerolles had the highest number of producers of absinthe. Sometimes some of the casks used in Fougerolles were sent to Pontarlier to cover their needs.

- Libertine 55 participated in the 2007 Absinthiades ; it was awarded 7th place.

Serving Suggestion

- At first, savour Libertine 55 with half a piece of sugar. Then add more or less according to your taste.

- For one measure of absinthe (3cl), add 2 to 5 measure of fresh water.

My favourite among Libertines. I agree with other comments: with less alcohol you've got a good intense flavour!

30 Jun 2017

Initially a Libertine 72 opposer, I grew to like it and 55 was a very pleasant surprise. Mellower, yet not watery; for an even lower price, you'll get the same full body and louche of 72 (if not more) but without such a strong alcoholic hit. I just bought two more bottles of this, as it's working really well to get by.

1 Apr 2017

light flavor. anise is there but not overpowering, a good one for people who aren't very used to it. The louche is exceptional, a couple drops of water and the cloudiness comes. The coloring is amber more than green, but its very drinkable

The Libertine 55 was close to what I was looking for, for the most part. Natural-looking color, light flavor, and aromatic. The only thing I would have wished for was a better louche effect, but the taste was great.
Based off of my ungenerous budget, I was merely glad to be able to purchase a brand which is more natural, as opposed to many of the dyed-green and artificial options on the market.

Absinthes.com delivered very rapidly and in a safe package, alongside the fountain and glass I had also ordered.
I was quite satisfied and have enjoyed this bottle consistently for the better part of a month.

18 Oct 2013

I quit enjoyed this beverage. It had a mild flavour but, flavour none the less. Very lovely.

10 Sep 2012

This has a sharp taste which I like, but at the same time a few suble tastes as an undertone.
It's one of my personal favorites.

18 May 2012

10 Aug 2010

The best standard absinthe. “Lemercier" and “Coulin" are excellent. However, “Paul Devoille" is best in Fougerolles. "Libertine 55" is not a big bouquet as dream “La Coquette". Bat, it is a corsage that should be loved. I will be able to recommend this absinthe to my customer with the conviction. If when he(her) drinks absinthe for the first time.

12 Jun 2009

Paul Devoille, France

devoille_distillery

1859: The distillery was founded by Xavier Devoille. His son, Paul Devoille, was very dedicated to developing the distillery, and worked hard on its growth. This is why up until this day, the distillery is named after him. Paul Devoille was a very important person in Fougerolles, he held the position of the major for many years.

1986: Due to the bad financial position the distillery was in, Jaques Veillet, the new owner of the distillery, decided to sell it to an experienced business man, who already invested into a couple of other distilleries inside and outside on France. René Miscault bought the distillery, and made some rapid administrational changes. He also expanded their product range, and opened the distillery for visitors to the public. These measures may seem drastic, however, they saved the distillery in the end. Today, Hugues Miscault, the son of René Miscault, runs the distillery.

Paul Devoille's Absinthe:

Their probably most popular absinthes, apart from the Libertines, and the Enigma Verte and Enigma Blanche. Absinthe Soixante-Cinq is a pretty interesting absinthe as well, with a quite spicy smell combined with a fruityness from the wine-alcohol base. Certainly, there are a lot of other spirits produced at Paul Devoille, such as eau-de-vies and liqueurs. From plum to strawberry, you can find nearly all of the common flavours.
