Drouin Set Les 3 Appelations Calvados 41% - 41.3cl

Drouin Set Les 3 Appelations Calvados 41% - 41.3cl
This product is currently not available.

This collection invites you to get to know the different characteristics of the different Calvados-appelations (regions of production). It includes three different 20 cl bottles: Calvados Sélection, Calvados Domfrontais Réserve and Calvados Pays d'Âuge V.S.O.P. Calvados Sélection: -Christian Drouin's Calvados Sélection is produced according to the rules of the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée du Calvados, distilled continuously and only bottled at 40% ABV after ripening for 2 to 3 years.

The must from the region Domfront with its high pear content of over 30% provides the warranty for the fine quality of this cider brandy. The Sélection is to be viewed as Calvados for first-time enjoyers, and for that it's been awarded numerous prizes. Awards: Silver medal, Vinalies Internationales 2011 Gold medal, Cambremer 2011 Silver medal, I.W.S.C. London 2011 -Calvados Domfrontais Réserve This distilled cider at 42% ABV is produced in the cellar cooperative Les Chais du Verger Normand according to the rules of the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée du Calvados Domfrontais. It ages for more than 3 years in oak casks where it gains its tones of topaz and cask aromas. The bouquet is dominated by fresh apples and pears and accompanied by cinnamon. The flavor is light with underlying wooden tones. This Calvados Domfrontais Réserve is perfectly suited for the so-called Norman Hole (trou normand), and otherwise will taste refined with sweet desserts. It should be served in a snifter at around 18 degrees Celsius. Awards: Silver medal, Paris 2005 Vermeil medal, Vimoutiers 2009 Silver medal, I.W.S.C. London 2009 Gold medal, Paris 2009 Bronze medal, I.W.S.C. London 2010 Bronze medal, Vimoutiers 2010 Grand Prix d'Excellence, Vinalies Nationales 2010 -Calvados Pays D'Âuge V.S.O.P. (Very Special Old Pale) is a blend of different cider brandies aged at least 6 years or longer in small, old wine casks. The bouquet begins by showing hints of sweet cider, grilled apple and baked goods with ginger, vanilla and cinnamon; then emerge traces of beeswax and almonds. Its taste is rich but light with a romas of apple pie with a long aftertaste of fresh apples.

This 42% ABV Calvados is extraordinarily successful, with a harmonic interplay between fruits and floral and spicy aromas, where one aspect never dominates the other. Because the Calvados remains light, it works wonderfully as a trou normand between courses (see the link on serving Calvados) or also works well served with Livarot cheese, also a speciality from Normandy. You can also buy the 70 cl bottle of this V.S.O.P. Calvados from our shop, or the Magnum bottle (1.5 liter). It should be served at room temperature in a snifter. Awards: Silver Medal, Paris 1999 Recommended by the Buying Guide to Spirits, published by the American Beverage Institute 1999 Listed as number 3 of the „Top five Calvados“ chosen by A la Carte – The Restaurant Magazine May 2000 Note Very Good (85-89) in Wine Enthusiast December 2002 Gold Medal, Caen 2003 Silver Medal, Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2003 Silver Medal, Vinalies Internationales 2003 und 2004 Gold Medal, Lisieux 2004 Gold Medal, San Francisco 2004 Gold Medal, Metz 2006 Silver Medal, Paris 2010 Note 86/100 in Guide des Vins Gilbert & Gaillard 2011

Did you know?

The history of Christian Drouin's Calvados began in 1960, when Christian Drouin Senior from Rouen bought the farm of Sainte-Anne in the Pays d'Âuge, in order to produce Calvados of the highest quality. This ambitious enterprise worked well, partly because he employed Pierre Pivet, at that time probably the most famous distiller of eau-de-vie de cidre, cider brandy.

The Drouins are interested in quality, not quantity: for this reason, the new plantation has been organized in the traditional manner, with only traditional plant sorts planted, which develop high-stemmed trees. They produce relatively little crop, but of a very special quality.

The Haus Drouin managed to receive countless medals and honorable prizes, including amongst them the award of best Calvados cellarer.

Serving Suggestion

It should be served at room temperature in a snifter.

The history of Christian Drouin's Calvados

The history of Christian Drouin's Calvados began in 1960, when Christian Drouin Senior from Rouen bought the farm of Sainte-Anne in the Pays d'Âuge, in order to produce Calvados of the highest quality. This ambitious enterprise worked well, partly because he employed Pierre Pivet, at that time probably the most famous distiller of eau-de-vie de cidre, cider brandy. Since 1969, Christian Drouin Junior also works in the family business - and although part of the company was auctioned off to shareholders in 1989, it remains a family company since the majority is still owned by family members.

Christian Drouin

Since 2004, the agrarian engineer and enologist Guillaume Drouin leads the company in its third generation as a family business.

Inspired by his success, Christian Junior bought an old horse stable in 1990, a cute hand-crafted structure from the 17th century, in order to establish a distillery there. The location now carries the prestige-inducing name "Coeur de Lion", the lion's heart. Otherwise, he's planted a fruit plantation, in order to eventually become independent of other fruit farmers. Notwithstanding these developments within his own company, the family is actively engaged with the cellar-collective Le Verger Normand (see the history of Calvados). Under Guillaum's direction, products with the label Comte Louis de Lauriston are produced, to which CHRISTIAN DROUIN S.A. holds the rights.

The Drouin Distillery today

The Drouins are interested in quality, not quantity: for this reason, the new plantation has been organized in the traditional manner, with only traditional plant sorts planted, which develop high-stemmed trees. They produce relatively little crop, but of a very special quality. The fruit mash is only pressed once, in order to only extract the best. After distillation, the distillate is aged in different sized casks of various ages, even including a few sherry and port wine casks - the distillate is filled on average once per year. That means, the casks are chosen with the goal of letting the Calvados develop under optimal conditions. That's how the Haus Drouin managed to receive countless medals and honorable prizes, including amongst them the award of best Calvados cellarer.

In Christian Drouin's wide assortment of Calvados you'll find a whole palate of unparalleled Millésimes, or pure-vintage Calvados, that maintain their own individual characters. But don't ignore the Assemblages of the house, which have been mixed from up to 20 different years of distilled cider, which also belong to the best of what Calvados has to offer.
