Matte Absinthe is produced by Lars Urfer at the Matte distillery in Bern. It is the first absinthe produced in Bern for more than 100 years.

Along with anise, wormwood and fennel, this absinthe contains lemon balm, peppermint and coriander. The wormwood comes partly from Bern and from the Val-de-Travers, the birthplace of absinthe. After the wormwood is dried in the Matte distillery, it is infused in alcohol and distilled in a 150 liter copper alembic (this is a relatively small still for a commercial spirit).

Matte Absinthe is characterized by an intensive note of wormwood and a well-balanced taste. Discover our tasting notes here.

Lars attaches great importance to a traditional manual production of his spirits (along with absinthe he also produces Matte Gin). All steps in the production process, from the selection of herbs, the distillation and the bottling and labeling of the bottles are done by hand, by Lars himself. All bottles are sealed with string tied in a pharmacist’s knot and with the wax seal stamp of the Matte distillery. This method was used before modern packaging techniques were invented. The old fashioned technique suits the traditional content of the bottle perfectly.

The Matte distillery was founded in 2016, in the former Broncos-Loge in Bern. Prior to this year, Lars distilled the first 200 liters at a commercial distillery (as required by the Swiss law). Thanks to crowdfunding, Lars was able to establish his own distillery.
