After absinthe's Prohibition in France in 1915, Pernod's production continued in Spain from 1918 until the middle of the 60s ; the absinthe was back then not forbidden in Spain.
In 1805, Henri-Louis Pernod founded “Pernod Fils” in Pontarlier, Doubs, Frqnce. It rapidly develops the production of absinthe.
It is a big success. Named the “green fairy”, absinthe becomes the favourite drink of artists, looking for new savours. The painters Manet and Degas, the poets Verlaine and Musset immortalise it in their works of art.
During the 19th century, Pernod develops internationally. As artists travel, they bring absinthe along with them enabling the spirit to get known in other countries. In France, absinthe becomes a national drink and strongly contributes to the development of the distillery.
At the beginning of the 20th century, “Pernod Fils” produces nearly 25000 litres a day. But the drink is at the centre of passionate discussions.
In 1915, the commercialisation and production of absinthe are forbidden.
In 1922, only the 40° aniseed aperitifs are allowed.
In 1938, markets Pernod 45, an aniseed spirit that quickly acquires the fame that absinthe used to have.
In 2005, Pernod is 200 years old, and for that occasion a “Limited Edition” bottle is created.
Today, Pernod exists on the five continents in almost 110 countries. Proposed by prestigious hotels and restaurants, it is savoured in the whole of occidental Europe, in the USA, in Australia and in Japan.
- At first, savour Pernod Fils Tarragona with half a piece of sugar. Then add more or less according to your taste.
