V.E.P. stands for Vieillissement Exceptionnellement Prolongé, or in English “aged for an exceptionally long time”. Chartreuse V.E.P. is respectively identical to both Chartreuse Jaune and Chartreuse Verte in its composition and production, but it's then aged for not only 2 to 3, but for at least 10 years in the oak casks of the Carthusian liquor cellar in Voiron. The liquor develops a significant finesse and lightness during this aging process. The reason for the production of this edition was the coronation of Queen Elizabeth the 2nd in England in 1953. At this time, the monks chose to reflect their positive experience in aging their liquor for an especially long time by initiating a series of products of aged liquors. The very first Chartreuse V.E.P. Was sold in 1963, and continues to be sold in numbered replications of the bottles that were used for Chartreuse in 1840, including a special wooden box in which they are shipped. Chartreuse V.E.P.s are wonderful digestifs at 54% ABV (green) or 42% ABV (yellow), and are best enjoyed chilled.

Chartreuse liqueurs are especially valuable spirits that are produced by monks at the Grande Chartreuse, the head monastery of the Carthusian religious order, in Voiron – near Grenoble, in France.

The production of Chartreuse liqueur is wound up in many secrets and myths. There are only two monks, Minister Benoit and Brother Jean-Jacques, who know the 130 various ingredients of the original recipe. Other sources relating to the original recipe are known by a third monk. We are relatively sure that ca. 1/3 of the ingredients originate in the Chartreuse region and the other 2/3 come from all over the world. All the ingredients, even including the coloring agents, used in all the charterhouse-produced liqueurs are 100% organic.
