This Vecchio Amaro del Capo liqueur is a symbolic product of Caffo distillery. This plant-based Calabrian liquor was taken from an old Calabrian recipe that is enriched with the knowledge handed down for four generations of the Caffo family. In 2010, this was the only Italian bitters to have won a gold medal in an international competition in Brussels. The peculiarity of this liqueur is the recommended serving temperature of -20° C!
Vecchio Amaro del Capo combines the active ingredients of various plants, fruits, flowers and roots from Calabria, which are soaked in alcohol. These help in digestion and promote well-being. These 29 herbs are used in Calabria for its tonic and digestive effects. These include, among others: bitter orange, orange, liquorice, mandarin, chamomile and juniper. Its fine, aromatic flavor seduces even the most delicate palate and those who have little taste for bitter drinks.
The history of the Caffo family business begins in the 19th Century, when the distiller Guisseppe Caffo begins to distill pomace. After several years of experience in the management of a distillery, his dream becomes reality: In 1915, he buys an old distillery in Sante Venerina, Sicily. Then he devotes himself entirely to his passion and later passes on his knowledge to his children.
Initially, the distillery focused on the production of wine-based spirits. Gradually, liqueurs are manufactured and refined according to old recipes. These products are the result of painstakingly precise doses of certain herbs and aromatic plants, which are infused into high quality alcohol. They are loved by connoisseurs and drinks enthusiasts.
Later, Sebastiano Caffo, the son of Guiseppe, takes his fathers place as a distiller. He proves himself as both leader of the family business as well as the manager of the distilleries. He acquires the distillery in Sao Paulo in Noto and Castiglione in Sicily. At the same time as this, one of the Caffo brothers returns from a long stay in Australia and intends to help foster the family business.
Sebastiano, Santo and Guiseppe found the “Caffo brothers – spirits and brandy distillery” with the goal of putting the Limbadi distillery in Calabria, which is known for producing excellent wines to purchase.
The Caffo brothers apply some fundamental changes with regards to the distillation apparatus and the processing of liqueurs, but they remain faithful to the traditional methods.
In 1966 Sebastiano takes over the Caffo family business and his son, Guiseppe is the CEO until today. Guiseppe now leads the family tradition with his son Sebastiano Giovanni.
The distillery is evolving under union of experience and innovation, and has several branches abroad. In addition, a new production plant will be built next to the old distillery Limbadi. In 2006, the distillery closed in the province of Udine (Friuli) in the family business, specializing the production of high quality grappa.
In 1999, the Caffo Beverages Inc. is founded. This is a company that mainly conducts alcohol and wine imports. Its headquarters are situated in New Jersey, making it possible to commercialize Caffo products in America.
The company “Liquirizia Caffo” is founded in Vivo Valentia and is specialized in the production of Calabrian liquorice liqueur. The bulk of the aromatic plants used are from the plantations of the Caffo farm in Limbadi, in the Feudo Montalto region. This farm is based in two varieties: Sangiovese and Gaglioppo, and processes them according to traditional methods of red wine.
The last branch is founded and headquartered in Germany. Caffo's goal now is to conquer the German market.
According to the Calabrian tradtion, the Vecchio Amaro del Cappo liqueur should be served in a small glass in order to gain the full advantage of the herbal characteristic.

Added on the : 23/04/2019 EnglishVery nice bitter, refreshing just dry on ice. Loads of flavours developing in the nose and the mouth.
It is NOT an Amaretto, no almond taste here. Maybe closer to a jagermeister, but far better and complex in aromas!
