Mezcal - ILEGAL

The History of ILEGAL Mezcal

The history of the Illegal Mezcal brand began in the bar Café No Sé in Antigua, Guatemala. Disappointed by the reality that they didn't have access to any high-quality mezcals to offer their customers, John Rexer went to the Oaxaca province and Mexico in search of better mezcal products. He was simply looking for traditional, high-quality products. Upon getting his hands on a few, he began selling these non-labelled illegal products under the table.
It didn't take long until his customers caught on to this new offering, and the bottles of high-quality stuff with hand-written labels quickly began selling out. The bottles also quickly landed in the backpacks of travelers, writers, and photographers, who traveled from Guatemala back to New York, London, Los Angeles, Amsterdam, Berlin, or Sydney. In the end of 2009, “Illegal Mezcal” was finally legalized and made available for purchase in choice quality bars in New York, also in Texas and California. Barkeepers and mixologists are especially fond of Illegal Mezcal's unique range of flavors. Many of them have taken the pilgrimage themselves, following John to Antigua and Oaxaca, in order to immerse themselves in the mystical ambiance of this timeless drink and the finesse of its traditional roots. Today, over 200 bars and restaurants worldwide offer Illegal Mezcal products.

The Brand today

But Illegal Mezcal is still a family company to this day: stickers, the unique flask bottles that comprise Illegal Mezcal, and the image of various nights out are still the only advertising tools used to spread the word about this unique brand.
The various mezcals in the series are produced by a mezcalero in the village of Tlacolula in the Oaxaca province of Mexico, whose knowledge of mezcal production is based on four generations of family tradition. Rexer markets all three types of mezcal: the joven, the reposado, and the anejo. Each product and each bottle can be distinguished by a batch number.

All Illegal Mezcal products are adorned with a COMERCAM certification (the Mexican regulatory association for the quality of Mezcal products) which guarantees that all ingredients are all-natural.
