Description of the products

Made in the midst of nature.

Kalevala Gin is subtly sweet, with piney resiny juniper, and a pleasantly spicy, firey ginger touch to the finish.

Organic raspberry leaf, cardamom, mint, rosemary and of course juniper go into this micro-gin. Ginger and juniper are the main notes.

In order to get the optimum extraction of flavours from the ingredients, some botanicals are soaked in spirit before distillation. Other more delicate ingredients, like raspberry leaves, are placed in the top of the stills so that steam and alcohol vapours pass through them and take on their aromas.

This gin is organic, according to the EU agriculture scheme, certification number FI-EKO-301.

Kalevala Gin is made by a team of two. Made only in small amounts, it is distilled very gently over 12 hours, allowing precise control over the flavour. The water used to dilute the strong distillate down to drinking strength is drawn from the distillery’s own well, pure and soft water. Bottled by hand.

Background

Kalevala gin is made an area of outstanding natural beauty: North-Karelia in Finland. A region of great importance to Finnish history, nestled next to the border with Russia, North Karelia is home to pine forests, pure rivers, and thousands of lakes.

The Name

The name Kalevala comes from The Kalevala, a 19th century epic poem of incredible importance in bringing together the Finnish people to fight for their language and ultimately gain independence as a free country. The Kalevala is a compilation of traditional oral folklore and mythology originating in Karelia and the rest of Finland.

A magical artifact called the Sampo features in the Kalevala epic. Created by Ilmarinen, the blacksmith god, this object supposedly brings good fortune to its holder. In the story it is lost at sea, and Ilmarinen’s people fall on hard times.

Back to the 21st century and the makers of Kalevala claim to have retrieved the Sampo from the sea and be using it in the manufacturing of their spirits…
The organic Kalevala Navy Strength Gin is produced in North-Karelia in Finland. The name Kalevala comes from The Kalevala, an epic poem of Finland.

At 50.9% alcohol, Kalevala Navy Strength gin is stronger in contrast to the normal Kalevala gin. Among the botanicals that go into this gin are juniper, Jerusalem artichoke, rosemary and sea-buckthorn. The result is a very aromatic taste with juniper as the main note and a slightly sweet touch.

This organic gin is produced in small quantities only.

The name Navy Strength originates from the history of the British Navy. In the 18th and 19th century, they carried gin on all ships. In order to ensure that they have a good gin that hasn't been diluted, they poured it onto gunpowder and lighted it. Once the gunpowder started to burn, they knew that the gin was of navy strength. If it didn't burn, then the gin was being diluted by the distiller.
