Liqueur Chartreuse Verte V.E.P. 54% - 1L

This product is currently not available.
V.E.P. stands for Vieillissement Exceptionnellement Prolongé, or in English “aged for an especially time”. Chartreuse V.E.P. is respectively identical to both Chartreuse Jaune and Chartreuse Verte in its composition and production, but it is then aged for not only 2 to 3 but rather for at least 10 years in the oak casks of the Carthusian liqueur cellar in Voiron. The liqueur develops a significant finesse and lightness during this aging process. The occasion for the production of this edition was the coronation of Queen Elizabeth the 2nd in England in 1953. At this time, the monks chose to reflect their positive experience in aging their liqueur for an especially long time by initiating a series of products of aged liqueurs. The first Chartreuse V.E.P. Was sold in 1963, and continues to be sold in numbered replications of the bottles that were used for Chartreuse in 1840, including a special wooden box in which they are shipped. Chartreuse V.E.P.s are wonderful digestifs at 54% ABV (green) or 42% ABV (yellow), and are best enjoyed chilled.

Les cinq étoiles c'est pour la gnôle.

Mais à 108 euros le litre, autant aller la chercher à Voiron.

I first discovered Chartreuse VEP in the 1970s and instantly fell in love with it. It remained a special-occasion treat for a great many years, but for the past 10-12 years my local importer ceased carrying it, even on special order. It was with great regret that I drank my 'final' glass a decade or so ago.

So I was delighted to discover that it is available from absinthes.com, and I'm already on my second bottle from them. What a treat to rediscover this unique and intensely flavorful gem.

I suggest putting it in the freezer for a few hours before serving. Because of the high alcohol it cannot actually freeze, but when it is served truly ice-cold the intensely herbal aromas and flavors are much more delicious than at warmer temperatures.

I still think of it as a special-occasion digestif, but now that it is available again, somehow I keep managing to find special occasions to celebrate. ;-)

Pour moi qui ne suis pas liqueurs, il y a là un puissant équilibre rare entre sucre, alcool, arômes et parfums.

Chartreuse liqueurs are especially valuable spirits that are produced by monks at the Grande Chartreuse, the head monastery of the Carthusian religious order, in Voiron – near Grenoble, in France.

The production of Chartreuse liqueur is wound up in many secrets and myths. There are only two monks, Minister Benoit and Brother Jean-Jacques, who know the 130 various ingredients of the original recipe. Other sources relating to the original recipe are known by a third monk. We are relatively sure that ca. 1/3 of the ingredients originate in the Chartreuse region and the other 2/3 come from all over the world. All the ingredients, even including the coloring agents, used in all the charterhouse-produced liqueurs are 100% organic.
