Wine Jean Bourdy - Vin Jaune- AOC Côtes du Jura 2005 - 62cl
The beginning of the year is characterized by cold, icy frost and heavy snowfall. This weather remains until March, when spring literally arrives from one day to the next with immediate high temperatures. The temperatures continue to rise in June, and a drought pervades all of July. What follows is an unusually cold August, which is in fact balanced out by a then unusually warm September in which the grapes receive their much-needed sunshine.
During the first biodynamic year on Jean Bourdy's premises, there are few if no vine illnesses and mildew problems at all. The harvest begins on September 18th, somewhat earlier than normal. The crop of the harvest consists of good quality grapes, but the size of it is significantly smaller than in previous years thanks to the initiation of biodynamic practices. However, Jean Bourdy's domain doesn't concern itself with quantity, but rather with quality – and the excellent quality can already be seen with the first glance of the harvested grapes!
This yellow-golden wine already leaves an impression just with its color! Its complex experience on the nose consists of various aromas: nuts, hazelnuts, a touch of nutmeg and vanilla. The flavor is unusual and immediately incomparably rich in aromas. At the same time, it is remarkably smooth and displays a grandiose, long-lasting finale!
Did you know?
This unique wine is bottled in a unique bottle, squat with a deep punt, called a "clavelin". The bottles are made at the glassworks at La Vieille Loye which has been making these specialist bottles since it gained the concession from Marguerite of Burgundy in 1506. Today, the bottles are no longer hand-blown, but machine-moulded, but they still conform to the same dimensions: each clavelin has a capacity of 62cl (0.62 litres) - based on the fact that for every litre of newly made wine put into barrel, just 62 centilitres is left after nearly six and a half years of ageing. Vin Jaune is the only wine allowed to be sold in France in a bottle of this capacity (a special dispensation had to be gained from the European Parliament to allow for this).
This remarkable dry wine, at its best immensely complex and very aromatic, is best appreciated after at least 10 years in bottle and has the ability, in good vintages, to age for a century or more.
